What are Night Terrors?

Night terrors are caused by the over-arousal of the central nervous system (CNS) during sleep. Night terrors are different from nightmares, as nightmares happen during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Night terrors tend to occur around 2-3 hours after falling asleep and happen when sleep moves from non-REM sleep to lighter REM sleep. Usually, this transition is smooth but sometimes a fearful reaction can occur and children can become upset and frightened.
